Headaches Q&A

Can Chiropractic Care Really Offer Relief for Migraine Headaches?

Chronic headaches problems like migraines are often treated with prescription drugs that have their own unwanted side-effects. About 75 percent migraine sufferers are women and initial onset is generally before the age of 30 for both women and men. Migraines often run in families, which suggests a possible genetic component. Migraines sometimes occur several times a month for some but less that once a year for others. Most patients report that their migraine attacks become less severe or occur less frequently as they get older.

Chiropractic offers a drug-free alternative for many people. Significant improvement for migraines as well as tension headaches can often be accomplished through spinal manipulation of the spine, not only for those with tension headaches but for those with migraines as well. Learning to recognize food, sound, light, and lifestyle triggers that tend to bring on migraines are important as well. Dr. Mark works with our patients in these areas.

Each individual case is different and requires a thorough evaluation before a course of chiropractic care can be prescribed. More often than not, Dr. Mark can generally offer real help for patients experiencing migraine headaches.

What Are the Symptoms of a Migraine Headache?

Migraines are intense, throbbing headaches often associated with sensitivity to noise or light and nausea. Many who suffer from migraines report an “aura” or visual symptoms prior to an attack. Some describe themselves as having a dream-like appearance or flashing lights.

What Causes Migraine Headaches?

Migraines are caused by a constriction in the blood vessels followed by a decrease in blood flow. When those constricted blood vessels dilate again, there is a rapid increase in blood pressure in the head. The rapid increase in pressure causes a pounding headache.

There are many theories as to what causes blood vessels to constrict but the exact cause is unknown. It is known that a number of factors can trigger a migraine attack. These can include:

  • Changes in weather patterns
  • Stress
  • Strong odors
  • Lack of good sleep
  • Foods that are high in amino acids
